Set up the HD3's is a simple process, there is not a network setup or passwords required nor any buttons to push. These speakers use bespoke Audioengine components; aramid fibre woofers, silk tweeters, Bluetooth aptX-HD and integrated power amplifiers all within a precision-tuned, hand-crafted cabinet, being versatile enough to suit many spaces and with pure, room-filling, full and dynamic sound. The B1's aptX HD Bluetooth Receiver and the D1's 24-bit DAC are combined with the speaker components pairing features of two of Audioengine's best-sellers for a full high-end analogue and digital audio system. The high-performance headphone amplifier in the HD3 is based on the OPA2134 low-noise opamp.

The amplifier is able to provide low-impedance, high-fidelity audio and a 2-volt output which easily drives a wide range of headphones. The Bluetooth is the aptX HD coded, which gives you a very impressive sound.

Plus, the Bluetooth AptX is backwards-compatible with SBC and AAC codecs as well as standard aptX so even if your smartphone or tablet does not support aptX HD, you can wirelessly stream music from any Bluetooth device. Most Bluetooth devices have a very limited range typically confined to one room.

Through careful signal management circuitry and antenna tuning, HD3 is a superior multi-room solution with up to 3 times the range of standard Bluetooth with no loss in audio quality. Bluetooth receiver and USB input on the HD3 both use the PCM 5102 DAC, renowned for its low-noise and high-fidelity. Used as an upsampling DAC, it will supplement all bit depths to 24-bits for a higher signal-to-noise ratio and lower noise floor.

All this, as well as the added benefit of onboard triple redundancy power source conversion and filtering, leads to impressive low noise and low distortion characteristics with a noticeable improvement. The amplifier for the HD3 is in the left speaker, and it is a conservatively-rated class A/B analogue monoblock design that gives great sound quality and greater flexibility. All the circuit boards for the power and pre-amplifier sections are vertically mounted for optimum mechanical shock shielding. Small speakers with a big sound that fills any room.
